Bumpers are prone to damage from low speed impacts to scrapes and dents. At Capital SMART, we repair and refinish front and rear bumpers, restoring both appearance and protection.
Front and rear bumper repairs for drivable vehicles
When most people say bumper, they mean the painted plastic cover on the front or rear of the car. Behind it sits an energy absorber, and behind that a reinforcement bar mounted to the body. Every bumper repair starts with an assessment of all three, plus the parking sensors, radar and cameras most recent vehicles mount in the bumper.
Capital SMART repairs and refinishes scuffed, scratched, cracked and dented bumpers on drivable vehicles, and replaces covers, absorbers and bars when repair isn’t the right call. Bumper repairs are available as a private repair with a free quote from photos, or through an insurance claim with our partnered insurers: AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons Insurance, Vero, Bingle and Suncorp Car Insurance.
Bumper damage we repair
Scuffs, scrapes and paint transfer
Where the plastic is intact and holds its shape, the work is refinishing rather than replacement.
Cracks and splits
Often repaired, filled and refinished, depending on crack length, mounting points and whether edges are torn.
Dents and pushed-in corners
When a cover doesn't flex back into shape, the deformation is corrected and the surface refinished.
Broken mounting tabs and brackets
Lose enough tabs and the cover won't sit flush, which usually means replacing it.
Damage around sensors and cameras
Damage in a sensor's field of view usually means replacing the cover, followed by calibration.
Bumper bars and absorbers
Designed to deform once. Where they've taken the hit, they are replaced rather than straightened.
How bumper repair works

Assessment
Our estimators inspect the cover, absorber and bar, mounting points, and any sensors, cameras and lights. Any calibration requirement is written into the scope from the start.

Repair or replace
Scuffs, shallow dents and short cracks are usually repaired. Broken tabs, damage through a mounting point or in a sensor's field of view usually mean replacement.

Refinishing
Repaired and replacement covers are prepared, primed, colour matched and painted, then blended into the adjacent panels so the bumper doesn't stand out from the guards beside it.

Refit, calibrate and check
The bumper is refitted, panel gaps are checked, and where required, sensor recalibration is carried out or coordinated. Every repair is backed by our warranty on all repairs.

Repair or replace? What decides it
Sensors changed the decision
Nearly every recent front bumper is a sensor mount, and radar reads through the plastic, so filler or changed cover thickness can affect how the system sees the road. That is a reason to have ADAS calibration identified and coordinated, not to default to replacement.
Who makes the call
Our repairer assesses and recommends a method. If you're claiming, your insurer authorises the method and parts: original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or high quality alternatives depending on your insurer's guidelines and availability. If you're paying directly, you decide and can ask for OEM parts.
Timing
Most minor repairs, including bumper fixes, are completed within days. A replacement waiting on an ordered part, damage that runs deeper than the cover, or a calibration requirement can extend that. We confirm an estimated timeframe once your vehicle has been assessed.
Bumpers on utes, vans and fleet vehicles
Work vehicles collect bumper damage quickly. We repair bumpers on fleet vehicles and rideshare and delivery vehicles with the same focus on getting them back on the road.

Common questions about bumper repairs
Can a cracked bumper be repaired?
Often, yes. Plastic covers can be repaired and refinished. Whether that is the right approach depends on where the crack sits, how long it is, whether the edges are torn, and whether it runs through a mounting point. A crack through a bracket or sitting over a sensor is more likely to need a replacement cover.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a bumper?
Repairing is usually less expensive, because you pay for labour and refinishing rather than a new part on top of both. The gap narrows when the damage needs extensive plastic work or recalibration is required either way. We don’t publish set prices; upload photos for a free quote and we’ll give you a clear estimate.
Will my parking sensors still work after a bumper repair?
They should, provided the work is carried out with the sensors in mind and any required recalibration is completed. We identify calibration requirements at assessment and coordinate them as part of the repair, so a sensor isn’t left reading distances incorrectly.
How long does a bumper repair take?
Most minor repairs, including bumper fixes, are completed within days. Timeframes extend when a part has to be ordered, when damage runs deeper than the cover, or when a safety system needs recalibrating. We confirm an estimated timeframe once your vehicle has been assessed.
Do you repaint the whole bumper or just the damaged area?
It depends on the damage. Small scuffs can be spot repaired and blended. Damage across much of the cover, on an edge or across a body line usually means repainting the whole bumper and blending into the adjacent guards so the colour is consistent.
Can I claim a bumper repair on insurance?
Yes, if you’re insured with one of our partnered insurers: AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons Insurance, Vero, Bingle and Suncorp Car Insurance. For minor damage it’s worth comparing a private quote against your excess first. We currently only accept insurance repairs from our partnered insurers.
