panel repairs

Panel damage is one of the most common types of accident repair. At Capital SMART, we restore vehicle panels to their original condition using advanced repair methods and professional refinishing.

Panel repairs and replacements for drivable vehicles

A vehicle’s panels are its outer skin: doors, guards, rear quarter panels, bonnet, boot lid, roof and sills. They take the brunt of car park knocks, side-swipes and low-speed collisions. Our panel technicians repair dented, creased, scraped and torn panels, and replace them when repair isn’t the right answer, then refinish the work so it disappears into the surrounding paintwork.

Capital SMART specialises in high quality repairs for drivable vehicles with low to medium accident damage, using quality parts and manufacturer-approved techniques. Panel repairs are available as a private repair with a free quote from photos, or as an insurance repair through our partnered insurers: AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons Insurance, Vero, Bingle and Suncorp Car Insurance.

Panel damage we repair

Dented and creased panels

From shallow door dings to sharp creases, reshaped and refinished where the paint has been disturbed.

Scraped and gouged panels

Side-swipe scrapes and scratches that have cut through the paint, repaired, filled where needed and refinished.

Torn or holed panels

Split or punctured metal usually calls for a replacement panel, painted to match before fitting.

Misaligned panels and uneven gaps

Panels that no longer line up are realigned so doors close properly and gaps are even.

Quarter panels and sills

Fixed parts of the body, not bolt-on panels. We assess whether repair or replacement is better.

Bonnets, boot lids and roofs

Large, flat panels where every ripple shows, reshaped and refinished to read as one continuous plane.

Panel repair considerations

Modern panel materials

Current vehicles mix mild steel with high-strength steels, aluminium and plastics. Each behaves differently under repair, and some can't take heat or aggressive reshaping without losing strength. Our technicians follow manufacturer-approved techniques for the material, which is identified at assessment before any reshaping is attempted.

What's behind the panel

Rear quarter panels often house blind-spot radar; guards and bumpers carry parking sensors; doors carry mirror cameras and side-impact sensors. Where a repair disturbs any of these, checking and recalibrating them is identified at assessment and coordinated as part of the repair. See ADAS calibration.

Panel damage or structural damage?

A damaged panel can hide damage to the structure behind it, such as a bent reinforcement bar. Our assessment covers what's underneath, and where structural components are affected on a drivable vehicle, that work is scoped alongside the panel repair. See structural and internal repairs.

Insurance or private?

For a single panel, compare a private quote with your policy excess. For several panels, an insurance repair through one of our partnered insurers may make more sense. We currently only accept insurance repairs from our partnered insurers; anyone can book a private repair.

Common questions about panel repairs

Can a damaged panel be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

Most panel damage from low-speed impacts can be repaired. We replace a panel when the metal is torn or badly stretched, when the material can’t be safely reworked, or when repair wouldn’t restore the panel properly. Your estimate sets out which approach we recommend and why.

For insurance repairs we use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts or high quality alternatives, depending on your insurer’s guidelines and availability. For private repairs, OEM parts are available on request; let us know when requesting your quote and we’ll assess availability and pricing.

Yes, when it’s repaired to the manufacturer’s approved method for that material. That is why the assessment considers what the panel is made from and whether reshaping is appropriate. Where it isn’t, we recommend replacement rather than a compromised repair.

Yes. Repaired and replacement panels are colour matched to your vehicle and blended into the adjacent panels, so there is no visible line where new paint meets old.

Most minor repairs are completed within days. Panel replacements that depend on parts, or repairs across several panels, take longer. We confirm an estimated timeframe once your vehicle has been assessed.

Aluminium and high-strength steels need different handling from mild steel. Our assessment considers what each panel is made from and follows the manufacturer-approved techniques for that material; where a panel can’t be safely reshaped, we recommend replacing it.
